To all the ‘Game of
Thrones’ fans who had been thirsty since the last aired episode of season 4
well here’s something to munch on while we wait a little longer for the next
season, I present to you ‘Vikings’.
Vikings is aired every Thursday
night on History and it has been receiving a lot of love since the midseason
finale of Season 1. Although a lot of people had been criticizing the show for
being a rip off of the almighty “Game of Thrones” one can argue that any show
that is aired nowadays that revolves around a time before cell phones and the
internet they basically are trying to match the ferocity that is GoT. With this
kind of notion “Vikings” fans all around the world are still thankful to the
head writer and master creator of the show Michael Hirst who coincidentally is
the creator of HBO’s ‘The Tudors’.
This underrated little
masterpiece is one of the greatest things that could happen in your Thursday nights.
History (also known back then as The History Channel) has brought to us the story
of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his family set a long time ago in the
Scandinavian lands. The show has Norse mythology, blood, tyranny, sex and so
much more, so why aren’t you watching?
Yes, there’s your usual
mix of seduction, betrayal, and political maneuvering and its awesome, but it
always comes down to family in the end. And to us fans, we all know that Vikings
at its core has always been about the importance of family. No matter what
happens, blood is thicker than water, well for now.
Already, the third year
of Vikings is off to a great start. With the first episode entitled ‘Mercenary’
it follows a year after the events of the exciting second season finale, which
saw the demise of King Horik, who was portrayed by the talented Donal Logue
(who is currently on Gotham).
Aside from our favorite
cast members who have come back for the show, this season’s wild card is Kalf
(Ben Robson). He should be one of those characters “to look out for this season”,
while he tries to usurp power from the lovely Earl Ingstad. Lagertha (who used
to be married to Ragnar in the first season) seems enchanted with the young
man, even suggesting that he ask her to marry him, but will she be alert enough
to see his other motives before it is too late?
What’s great about Vikings is that it really follows what’s written in Norse History, the network of
this show has a strong background of how this series unfolds but yet again this a
televised show and not a documentary which makes it even more interesting to
watch.
In one of the article
I’ve read from an interview with Michael Hirst at last year’s San Diego Comic
Con, we know that there will be a battle in Paris at some point this season,
but the journey from England to France should be a fascinating ride as this
season progresses.
If you’re a fan of Game
of Thrones then you shouldn’t miss out on this series. I’m brave enough to say
that to some elements Vikings is better than GoT but who am I to judge right? So
check this series out before it goes mainstream.
